Lesson I-Observation

I-Observation:  Scanning (viewing techniques) intersections:

ModusDuration (minutes)
Manual18

This is an extensive, and for learning to drive safely, very important lesson that trains scanning while approaching an intersection. In addition, all actions preceding a junction are trained. The objective is to teach the student to complete all actions in time before reaching the intersection. Turning left, turning right and going straight through are trained separately. In some cases, the student has to stop before entering the intersection to give way to traffic.

The lesson consists of the following subjects:

  1. Scanning, turn right, low speed: the student approaches an intersection 3 times and turns right. The scanning is explained with the ‘follow my steps’ method.
  2. Scanning, turn left, low speed: the student approaches an intersection 3 times and turns left. The scanning is explained with the ‘follow my steps’ method.
  3. Scanning, going straight through, low speed: the student approaches an intersection 3 times and goes straight through. The scanning is explained with the ‘follow my steps’ method.
  4. Actions approaching intersection, turn right, higher speed: 3x with gearing down and reducing speed before the intersection.
  5. Actions approaching intersection, turn left, higher speed:  3x with gearing down and reducing speed before the intersection.

In addition to the scanning techniques, the VI checks the correct use of indicator, whether speed is reduced in time before the junction, the timely shifting down to second gear when turning left or right and the proper application of the priority rules.

For each subject, the order of procedures is:

Start engine -> Drive off -> approach intersection and turn right/left (or straight through) -> approach intersection and turn right/left (or straight through)  -> approach intersection and turn right/left (or straight through)  -> Stop car -> Switch off engine
